Humphrey Chiramba

Final year Elecrical and Computer Engineerng student.

In a nutshell, I am a 25-year-old embedded systems engineer who loves God, cycling and adventures. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, I have spent over half my life there, and currently I’m based in Harare. I spend my free time hanging out with friends, working on small projects (programming or electronics) and exercising every now and again. I am passionate about education and helping other people find a passion in electronics as it is such a wide field and with that in mind, that’s my dream: to educate people by whatever means possible about the possibility of ‘doing it yourself’ and having fun with it.

Here’s my Resume/Curriculum vitae.

Experience

Embedded Systems Engineer: August 2023 - Present

Plentify’s mission is to create technologies and services that enable smarter energy management and usage.

Having completed my internship, I moved to a full-time role with Plentify, joining their Firmware team. We are working with Zephyr on embedded microcontrollers to develop new products which will be sold to both businesses and the public.

Software Engineering Intern: May - August 2023

This was a role mainly based around improving some of the current systems which the Firmware team at Plentify were using. This included working with Python tools, AWS and Heroku.

Teaching Assistant: August 2021 - November 2022

I assisted the department by being a Teaching Assistant for the 3rd year ECE Design course in 2021 and 2022 and for a service course in the department, EEE2041F/2049W. This was a general administration job as well as tutor management.

Here are some of the projects students in 2021 made:
EEE3097S 2021 Final Presentations.

Tutor: March - July 2021

I tutored the undergraduate final year High Performance Computing course as well as the 3rd year Design Principles course. This involved offering students assistance with tools such as OpenMP, OpenCL as well as a bit of FPGA work and project design and presentation.

Intern: June - July 2018, January 2019

This was my first engineering based internship. It was nice to see how an actual product came to development and was being maintained. In my time here, I was involved in debugging and testing the then latest version of their fire detectors. I also got to develop some of their in house test equipment. I was also exposed to 3D modelling and laser cutting.

Intern: October 2019

I spent time working or debugging some of their teaching robots. These would go out to schools and return with issues and it was my job to find issues and fix them.

Student Front Desk Assistant: February - November 2018

This role helped develop my administration skills and interpersonal skills. The need to serve students well as well as carrying out routine tasks helped cement this.

Memberships

2020: UCT IEEE Student Branch Chairperson

This  had demanded a lot of time and effort, however I am soldiering through. It has grown my leadership skills and is broadening my horizons by having a lot more responsibility for the members of the society.

2019: UCT IEEE Student Branch Marketing and Public Representation

In this time, my creative skills as well as social media prowess were stretched to market the society well. I had to design posters and keep the society social media accounts in check.

2017 – 2018: Member

I spent the first two years of my membership dormant and attending some of the events that were hosted. I fell in love however with the society after attending an Outreach Buildathon in 2017.

Education

Currently, I am working on a system to help recover patients and training sportsmen to improve their rehabilitation or training through monitoring movement using low cost Inertial Measurement Units (IMU).

Apart from working towards a degree, I have spent much time honing my skills in other disciplines. In this time I learnt to expand my horizons and learn a new instrument(guitar), lead a campus society, co-lead a refurbishment project and even work on some small electronics projects.

I spent some time tutoring within my first residence as well as being the Senior Mentor.

2011 - 2016

In this time, I experienced the most growth as I was pushed to perform at my best in many disciplines. I left Peterhouse with one instrument under my belt (piano), multiple service ties(Debating, Chapel Service) and a cultural participation tie(Debating). I was also awarded Half Colours (Academics, Debating, Volleyball) and Full Colours (Debating and Public Speaking).

I was the chairperson for the school’s Debating and Public Speaking. Alongside this, I was a co-Project Manager for the Interact Club and most importantly a school prefect (Head of House of Founders).

2004 - 2010

My leadership skills were first developed here. I had many accolades for my performance in class and on the sports field. I also first played a piano here. I would also say my musical journey began here as well.
